Yep, I am waiting for this one :)

I have ASN (upgraded from AS2012) and very, very (VERY) happy with it. It's the best weather generator I've every seen (and with the exception of FSGW, I have/had them all).
The emphasis with ASN is "weather generator". While with REX it has always been a texture upgrade suite, albeit a very good one, that's where the emphasis has always been and judging by the screenshots REX4 Direct will focus again on the textures.
Further more, using the HD textures of REX (Essentials + OD) has allways resulted in a massive increase of VAS on my system, forcing me to go back to non-HD textures.
It will be interesting to see what new aspects REX4 brings to the playingfield, but I doubt it will (be possible to) beat ASN in terms of weather generation....
But.... if it proves to be a valuable addition (maybe next to ASN) and if there's an attractive upgrade path, I'll buy it...

The thing about these preview shots REX and ORBX post is that the same has been extremely modified to obtain such crisp and beautiful shots. Don't expect YOUR sim to necessarily look like their do, even with their textures installed.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm so stuck on weather...I tell you. Textures...no such issue...Rex hands down. Would love for ASN and REX to work together (would be ideal as could then buy both rather than be in limbo and not be able t buy either yet) but if not it might have to be Opus and Rex. Just want the dilemma to be over but while its there, I can always just keep adding new sceneries and certain selected aircraft so no biggie, I guess. The displayed screenshots of that water look unbelievable but there is that niggling worry about VAS at the back of my head. Ultimately...these textures look absolutely amazing! :-)

Given these wonderful weather addons I'm amazed there hasn't been a collaboration that allows the same to be painted on an aircraft's weather radar, or has it been done and I've just missed it..

Regards

Dave W

It does look like that... you need to know your way around the sim though.

Yes, there's an emphasis on textures, but you guys haven't tried the new weather engine so don't be too quick on judging it. I say, wait and see. :)

Paul said...

pretty pictures and nice UI but will the weather generation engine do what they claim it does.....probably not. The track record and the support forum history does not lie and the forum is full of excuses and " we'll look into it" with no results.

Marketing ploys fool way too many people today.

Sid said...

That's a very fair point Adi. Might be much better than the current REX weather. Not judging the new one...will definitely wait and see...the only way to know...as you rightly point out. No misunderstanding intended buddy! Cannot judge what is not available!
Take care,
Sid

Bought Rex Essential only 3 weeks ago. Hope there will be a kind of upgrade price.

I might look at switching to this weather engine if it is better will get it for sure because of the textures

I just Buy REX + overdrive there is 5 month and that's again necessary pay full price again ...
That's the name off respect for the customers.

I can only shake my head when i read things like "Intellectually Synced Texture Engine works hand-in-hand with REX4 Weather Direct and REX4 Architect":

http://www.realenvironmentxtreme.com/forums/index.php?/topic/28398-announcing-rex4-texture-direct-hd/

There is only one really decent weather engine and that's FS Global Real Weather. And they don't need to make up and use nonsense marketing phrases to sell their product!

Paul said...

I agree Sean 100%

What you call nonsense, I call a bunch of lies.

That is the marketing ploys that fools follow and I have no idea why it works... the problem is that it does work, and WWIII will be here soon because of the same reason... we have a bunch of fools in this world.

To be honest REX textures look nice but I hate their ways and their weather engine is much worse than the stock FSX real weather with FSUIPC.

I have no desire to support liars and deceivers.

RELEASED!!!!

Who cares about the GUI? Its the accurate weather I want & I get it with ASN. Instead of improving RexE they made new stuff & didn't fix the bugs in RexE.....just take a look at their support forum, it's spamed with 1000's of complains & they blame the "limitation" on FSX, they not ripping me of this time!

Sean McFadden said...

You should try FS Global Real Weather. As far as I'm concerned it's way ahead of the competition and doesn't rely on dreamed up marketing phrases to convince people to buy it.

Sean McFadden said...

ASN weather isn't accurate, I tested the trial version with both Opus and FSGRW and it fails miserably. REX4 looks like a just in-time for Xmas repackage of nothing new.

Flying Squirrel said...

Just the textures have been released and at EUR 30 that's way over my budget.

Todd said...

$25 for a massive amount of textures is worth it. I have the weather covered with Opus.

Xander said...

It is really a piece of ****. Sorry for my words, but i feel robbed. The quality of the textures is not improved compared to previous versions. Also I miss the ability to customize the textures and for some reason i cant reverd the changes i have made.... or reinstall the textures which i have selected in REX essentials. Some may disagree, but this is just my honest opinion.

Ryanb said...

My thoughts exactly, Sean.
Same textures, different GUI.

airman_17 said...

As a user of REX essentials I'm worried that we will effectively be abandoned from any updates, progress, etc. unless we fork over ANOTHER $35 for essentially the same product. IMHO milking your customers like that is bad business

knife said...

what's the difference between this and REX essentials?

CGaft said...

You only get the textures, no weather engine...which is crap anyway! There's no difference, thrust me on that! they claim they have discovered some "magic" new "intelligent" textures...that's bullshit just to get your money!

jake said...

i believe they are saying it will install textures based on weather conditions. weather direct is the name of there new weather program, and weather architect is for building your own weather. just because you dont understand what they are saying doesn't mean its a marketing ploy.

Unknown said...

You can still use REX Essentials... REX only changes the textures inside your FS texture folder.

Xander said...

It feautures the promised sound effects (essentials), new runway textures and new so called HD cloud textures. it is really Milking customer, it offers no functionality increase and the textures are even worse it just doesnt look real.

Unknown said...

Guys, let me tell you the difference between red od and this new rex. The difference is analogical to the difference between win 7 and win 8. Win 7 is great, right? but Win 8 is better! True, they almost look and function the same, but it's within the small details that make the difference! Win 8 is more refined, more fined tuned. This is what rex 4 is. I noticed right away how the sky textures and especially the sun and lens flare textures are much more life-like. Of course hues are a matter of taste, but from my pov, I can definitely testify it's more realistic now.

PS,
one of the greatest features is the super-fast textures installing.. 5 seconds to install a complete theme. That's astonishingly fast! :)

Manuel said...

When Win 8 release ... Microsoft make a very good discount for peoples make update and not only ridiculous 5$ discount.

airman_17 said...

Also there was a 4 year gap between windows 7 and 8. What's to say they will not release REX5 next year leaving behind REX4 users unless they pay again.

i bought this last night from pc aviator and still yet to finish my download, there servers must be loaded down or something, i am on a 100 mbps fiber optic connection and very dissapointed with pc aviator, i emailed support with no response yet, they need to provide a torrent for people that buy the product as it requires an activation key to install it,i download call of duty gosts from steam in 45 min and it was 30 gig, suggest people buy it somewhere else

Unknown said...

I agree to some extent, yes.

cj said...

I agree that it's not very good. It seems like there are less textures to pick from now and I wonder how much the weather part will be. I'm too invested in REX now but if I wasn't I would jump to the competition.

Unknown said...

Same textures? Same quality? Wow, you guys seriously need to have your eyes checked. I have both REX 3 + overdrive and REX 4 and I uninstalled REX 3 + overdrive, that's how good I think it is? Seriously...I've been blown away at times by REX 4.

Just the fact that some of you are comparing it with FS Global Real Weather tells me that you have no clue what you're talking about, because REX 4 is only textures...
