Rant. Not that I am a big fan of American. I have flown the airline dozens of times and on a service perspective, I feel US based air carriers fall very short of their Asian and Middle East counterparts like Cathay, Singapore etc. I realize the new American Airlines livery is growing on many people and whereas I am a firm advocate of a transition from the older AA livery which has been around for way too long in my opinion, the new livery is just not growing on me.
At all. I guess it's easy to like it online and in pictures, but as someone who stands next to these birds daily, I must say the new livery looks a bit cheap and cartoonish especially in the paint on the tail. I find it very difficult to take the new livery seriously. The livery lacks a mature look and as I do like the new red and blue beak logo, they should have never scrapped the scissors logo which is the hallmark of American. It's like Lufthansa dropping their Crane logo, or KLM dropping the Crown logo. Heck, even United dropped the "U" logo which is a shame. Supposedly, the new livery may not stick pending a vote from AA and US employees. As I stated a couple years ago, the shot in this article would be my preference. Looks professional, and still maintains the "feel" of the American Airlines legacy set by the former livery.
Consider this post filler fodder while we look for news and work on our reviews... And feel free to disagree with me!

I agree. I wish we could have the old livery back too!
I absolutely agree. The chrome livery is one of my favourite of all airlines. The new one? .....!
I for one welcome such nice filler articles. Very nice...thank you. Interesting subject matter indeed, fresh and much appreciated discussion on real-world aviation, which in turn impacts on us :-) I think you make some good points and the images you display do certainly have a more established, mature and 'serious' look to them which preserves the identity of American Airlines nicely...that blue does have a nice distinct and distinguished look and feel to it, and works well with the white and red. I don't mind the current livery but, as you say, I have not seen it on a real aircraft and can see what you say...and I do agree with your points and think it could be done better, especially if they're going to review it. I'm sure there'll be a wide variety of opinions, which is nice but the important thing is its nice to discuss some fresh real world topics like this now and then and I really enjoyed it. Nice one buddy...and cheers for that!
All the best,
Sid
Do not like the logo and typesetting, but do like the grey color – very solid feel.
I'm not so sure about the new livery myself. The one that you included that you say you prefer seems like a little bit of a throwback to the US Airways livery used prior to the US-AWE merger. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the theory is that it's much easier and cheaper to paint a plane primarily white, although an article I found sourced on Wikipedia states, regarding the current US livery:
"Operational needs and employee suggestions were considered in the design of the new livery, with the hotter climates of the Phoenix and Las Vegas hubs making the lighter blend of colors both an aesthetic and comfortable choice. In addition, lighter tones of paint tend to last longer and are easier to keep clean."
Interesting!
Retro and expensive. Slightly reminiscent of the USAirways prior livery too. That my two cents
Bottomline is what counts. Jon is spot on, it saves AA on operational, but doesn't translate to better fares??? Hmmm. We'll have to wait and see47hrs
I agree 100% as someone who also stands next to these planes every day. In fact, some time ago I said nearly the exact same thing about the tail. It is hard to see at a distance or in photos but when you get near it you can see that the blues and reds aren't blended at all but are actually like a half tone pattern of dots. It looks awful really.
Well, being an employee for AA, I've gotten used to it. Yes, they're having a vote on wether they should keep the new tail or go back to the old tail (that's what it's mainly about), I chose the new one. The new livery would look to plain with the old tail IMO.
Correct. Looks like former USAirways. Too interchangeable.
In my opinion, I have grown to get used to the new livery and now even like it, better than the old and boring A A and "tin-looking" fuselage with the "plastic-and-not-shiny" nose... It just didn't match with the rest of the fuselage! Just my two cents...
The new livery tail section is horrible! the front & it's new logo is pretty good, but they doesn't fit together. Watching the tail makes me dizzy, it's like watching something that moves & isn't solid..rant!
While I like the new American logotype, logo and silver, I really don't care for the new tail. Seems they could do something like really oversize AA with maybe positive-negative letters, or even ghosted.
Hey isn't it similar to the Cuban Airliner tail?
Bring back the orange lighting bolt (astrojet) livery!!!!
I dislike the new American, heck, it doesn't feel like the same conservative airline it's always been (I might be politically liberal, but I like my airlines plain). Furthermore, it feels as if the airline has been run by Doug Parker even before the merger was made official.
If there ever was a shotgun marriage in the airline industry, this one was it.
I like the new livery. I've flow American for years, hell, my mother was a flight attendant for American for almost three decades. However, I never really liked their old livery and I'm glad they went another route with it. Still, it isn't official yet, and employees are being given the option to vote on one of two potentials.
I understand the frustration though. Here's a custom livery I did the QW 757 (Air France).
