I already own UK2000's Cardiff and I'm pretty happy with it. I can't see much difference between the two sceneries.

Lots of Aussie cars in the carparks!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of ORBX and 29Palms, but both are wasting their time, IMO. UK2000/Gary Summons already beat them to this airport with an amazing rendition of his own.

Are you serious? Teh Gary Summons EGFF is really poorly made with blurry ground details and missing buildings. His building textures are also really just not up to Orbx standards. I can see already that the Orbx/29Plams version features much nicer detail and the fact it comes free with Wales is a bonus.

I also do not understand why a developer is critizised for making a better version of an already released airport. DOes that apply also to aircraft developers? Only one A3xx or B737 because it's already been made? Whatever happened to the concept of choice?

FTX Wales is on my shopping list for sure !

It is certainly no waste of time. The region of Wales is not particularly large, so I guess they see the addition of an airport as important to the sellability of the region. If you have UK2000s EGFF already, I can see it is a bit of an issue. We also need to remember that no developer has an exclusive right to a particular airport or region, though I can understand Gary Summons being annoyed at this. To be homest, OrbX had to do Cardiff, as it is the biggest airport in Wales I guess...

I can call myself lucky in the fact that I have not purchased the UK2000 version. I can wait and see how the OrbX version looks and runs, as I can always deactivate it if I prefer to run the UK2000 version...

I think it's great that there is some competition coming into the UK market, but very disappointing that Orbx are not offering photoscenery compatible airfields, only making them fit with their regions. I will not buy FTX regions as I want 100% accurate vfr navigation, but I would pay and buy all if their airfields to go with my photoscenery if they were compatible. Maybe Orbx think that I can be bullied into buying their region and sacrificing my photoscenery to get their airfields, but that won't happen... My loss and theirs but I wish they'd cater for my niche in the market :(

The UK2000 Cardiff isn't too bad quality wise, perhaps Orbx would be better off doing Swansea, Anglesey or Chester/Hawarden. those airports fits their GA focus.

Or perhaps they should have included NI or Scotland as well.

I not sure why a quality dev like Orbx is even doing Wales. Its such a dump & one of the ugliest countries in the world.

I dont think they could have sold such a small region like Wales without a gift as they might want to sell it for 34 Euros, the same as for Pacific Northwest. How small can a region get? Also Ftx Netherlands is already announced. And finally FTX Luxemburg also for this price?

The Netherlands by itself is a limited market, IMO, solely for the fact that you've got NL2000 V4 which is a high-level photoscenery with some autogen that's freeware. Given that exists, I don't foresee ORBX Netherlands selling particularly well, especially as you mention, at these prices. I think there is much more potential in doing the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg as one region at 34 Euros.

In my opinion, ORBX wants to "take on the world" (purple tentacle :) )in small steps. These steps are: FTX regions, FTX global, FTX global including regions, mesh, photoscenery and autogen. As we all know, there is no available good enough quality commercial photo textures for the entire world, but I think in a few years it will be. But thats only my opinion.

A lot of people d'like taking on the world.
If only we could have 10 Orbx, we would have a mature prospering FS world. Just remember that besides 8-12 professional teams, all the others are working on their sundays (and not all their sundasy)..
We are on the razorn now (french expression)

I wish ORBX could do the entire world. Seriously. I dream of a world, where Prepar3d 2.0 has dx11, 64-bit coding, stable 60fps at any circumstances on my current hardware with ORBX stuff all around me built in the simulator. And I wouldn't need weather software, mesh, photosceneries, additional textures, atc addon, enbseries etc. just planes and airports.

It would be nice if ORBX moved off the vector landclass theory and would actually do full seasonal photoreal and autogen. FVFR are on the right track with that if only they would do all seasons.

Well, I posted on the Orbx forum asking if they would consider releasing photoscenery compatible airfields. I was very polite - only asked them to consider the market segment I represent (people who have a lot invested in photoscenery and don't want to move away from it). Unfortunately my comment/question has been removed without any comment or reply at all. I really don't like knocking developers, but I find that Orbx, nice as their products are to look at sometimes, leaves a nasty feeling behind. They want you to spend all your money with them, by crippling products (airfields) unless you own and use a complementary product that you might not want to use (ie FTX regions for me) and are not even considerate in moderating their forum :( Well, I suppose it is theirs and they can do what they wish with it, but I really thought there was an opportunity for them to sell products to people like me, without compromising any other potential sales. It appears JV and Orbx unfortunately don't agree with me and are adopting an approach of 'You're either with us or against us'. I don't like that kind of agressive arrogance - and I certainly won't be spending any of my hard earned money with people with that kind of attitude. A real shame :(

Kevin, perhaps you should make a thread about this, rather than posting in a survey thread that specifically asked people NOT to post unrelated/off topic posts in, it was CLEARLY stated in the OP that off-topic posts would be removed, which seems to have happened, or maybe you just posted it there so you could come cry about it after it was removed?, its actually your attitude that is disappointingly arrogant

Hi fellow Orbx fan. Well, I didnt think I was posting off topic, because the thread asked what 15 airfields Orbx should do next, and the first line of my post was 'any'. (I thought that was relevant?!) I merely went to qualify that comment by saying I probably would buy any only if they were 100% compatible with my photoscenery. Anyway, I posted a broadly similar comment in another thread,(again one which I thought related) and JV did reply, credit where it's due, so leat's put that one down to miscommunication. I will PM JV with brief comments because I'm not sure I was clear to him about some of the incompatibilities though. On here, let's not deteriorate into personal attacks, my posts have only ever been about finding a way for me to use Orbx airfields without having to disable half the scenery or use the FTX region :)

Clearly you are not a developer and understand the sheer scale of the work required to do 5-seasons annotated photoreal over a large area. It would be measured in man-decades and is just not financially feasible. If it were there would be dozens of products on sale that had it.

Landclass is not a "theory", it is how FSX was designed to be developed for for large area scenery or whole countries. Orbx are simply extending the concept of what Aces began with to whole countries and regions but with massively customised levels of detail. That is the only way they could hope to cover the globe.

Kevin I think you are asking Orbx to make products for other developers' addons and I doubt if that is something that would be in their interest. Of course they want you to purchase FTX regions for their airports to sit on top of, that just makes good business sense on their part.

Good luck with trying though, but I doubt you'll get very far. You may even change your mind once they finish the whole of the UK :)

Kevin Firth said...

Well yes, in a way. I really don't want to use FTX because I am using my FSX to practice rw PPL nav routes. For that I'd much rather have single season accurate photoscenery than FTX region eye-candy. Don't get me wrong it looks beautiful, but I was the kind of child who refused to play matchbox cars with other kids in my sandbox because all the cars weren't the same scale :p How do you think I feel about not being able to see streets I KNOW exist? :D Nope, I'm never going to go for the landclass regions... As for the commerce side of things, at the moment Orbx are going to lose £100's of my custom for the sake of FTX-England. I truly believe there's a way they can cater to the market segment I represent, without compromising other cross-selling. JV has articulated that the only problems might be slight misalignments and colour diferences, but having reviewed Chichester, I can happily add autogen suppression, seasonal conflicts and terrain height inconsistencies as well. Now, I could spend ages hacking and tweaking each one of their airfields to fit with my photoscenery, but that would also involve deactivating some not insignificant features and certainly not everyone is going to have the skills to do it, let alone be willing to pay full whack for a product they can only use half of. Hence, I think it would make sense for Orbx to release a version of the airfields that fit properly. I'd win because I'd get lovely airfields, they'd win because they'd generate additional sales. What's not to like about that? :)
