I am so so so lost right now

If nickn is right, I can only foresee a grim future to FS scenery addons,

Phil said...

Has NickN gone off the deep end?

When he writes that FTX Global was designed is a "takeover" of FSX to disallow use of any other freeware or payware scenery, not to provide better scenery textures and landclass placement, he officially lost me.

He must fear for his product or business if he goes so far out of his way to deface Orbx and say he's not in it for the money.

If I were John, I wouldn't touch that wild rant with a ten foot pole.

Mike said...

Phil,

Did you actually read his post ?
NickN knows a lot about FSX and how it was designed, and although I have never purchased any of his products, I do tend to believe him.

Charlie Bravo said...

Ok there NickN you keep on telling yourself that :)

Matt said...

I have used GEX and UTX in the past and use FTXG now. What NickN is saying clearly makes sense to anyone with half a brain regardless of who they may support. He is right to highlight this. Orbx should have an uninstaller which undoes all the changes made by the installer. Simple as that really. As a customer I expect that and Orbx need to provide it.

Phil said...

Yep, every word. Did you?

While I value NickN's performance advice, his opinions on Global should probably be taken with a grain of salt.

Unknown said...

OMG, hmm don't turn FSX into a almost "political war" - to work together and understand each other must and will always be the key for good relationship between developers, let's keep it that way - and FSX will have a brighter future, thank you ;-) Sugiii

I was hesitant at first and then I took my fist flight withFTXG. this product has made all my afcad modified airports look amazing. Best FS scenery product of all time.

I love Flight1 FEX and GEX....always have since FS2004, they use a mix of very realistic sky colours for morning and sunset skies and also a mix of those god awful bright unreal orange/red skies that ORBX KEEP sampling in their screenshots...both of which you can choose to your liking! It looks so s**t might i add! The product FTX Global does look very good but there are concerns about a number of areas i fly to on the regular...Barca, Malaga which thus far dont look very much better than default FSX...I currently would not trade in GEX for FTX Global YET...i need more proof of patches and landclass updates...Spain looks to green as a whole and im sure most of use that have flown over it in real life know green isnt as common as say England....I have ORBX FTX England and Wales...fab purchases, no doubt but Global is too much of a risk to just drop a product i have stood by for years!...Just my 50pence

cabnz said...

We should be allowed to and be able to uninstall FTX Global but we can't. To me that is disgusting that they haven't provided an uninstaller as yet. This is CONTROLLING from FTX.
And just for your info, I have purchased all of there products but this is turning me against them.

cabnz said...

Good decision at this stage. I purchased FTX Global and installed it into both FSX and P3D but when I see farm fields on the top of mountains etc I decided I wanted to uninstall - but I can't at the moment because it doesn't ship with an uninstaller.

DAndre Newman said...

FTXGlobal makes you back up your default textures. So all you need to do is replace those textures. But I do agree, i was not aware there was not an uninstaller. Not good.

cabnz said...

I've done that and replaced the original files but there is still other files that you have to try and find - which to me you shouldn't have to do. There are threads about how to find them etc on the FTX forums but it's the principle really.
Don't get me wrong, I have every other product of there's and I think they are good but even though I bought and installed Global into both FSX and P3D, I'm not convinced it's a best buy yet.

Bart said...

Anyone try the FSX repair function?
It will replace the textures put in by FTX with default.

Tim Hastings said...

The Windows OS has built-in mechanisms to facilitate installed applications to be uninstalled, providing of course that developers actually make use of these mechanisms.

Many companies such as Orbx and Flight1 are lazy and don't deliver their software with professional uninstallation support. I see this as a direct violation of my hard-disk's real estate.

While I don't condone the pirating of software, until these companies treat end-users with more respect and change their blatant disregard of hard disk space and conflicts with other installed application, I can't say that I feel sorry for them.

I call it karma.

Frederik Hagedorn said...

The whole FTX Global release and ensuing DX10 fiasco has left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

I would have welcomed an official apology from John Venema, that he didn't deliver his product in a condition as promised. I see nothing apologetic in his posts, no admittance of having screwed up the release.

On top of that there is the whole issue of FTX Global's interaction with other products now and in the future, as well as the lack of a feature to be able to simple restore FSX or Prepar3D to the pre-FTX Global condition.

If Orbx are clever enough to program something like FTX Central, then they most definitely have the ability to program an uninstaller and restore point. The fact that they haven't allocated any resources to doing this, is a slap in the face to all of their customers.

cabnz said...

They have said that they are working on an uninstaller but that was a week ago and the point is that it should have come out with one originally.

And yes, the whole DX10 thing was pretty bad too. I know that the night lights thing was put in at the very last moment but it should have been tested first. Everybody on the forums have been and were happy to wait for a finished product.

I'm not trying to bash FTX but I just think that they got this one wrong - which could be big time if other dev's are going to have trouble with this.

cabnz said...

I agree! I don't condone pirating either and I won't pirate but I can see why people do it sometimes.

Dave Boeing said...

I love it and fly through Asia a lot! It looks much much better. It would be great to see more authentic coastlines though.

JamesHongKong said...

Be interesting to see how many of these FTXG bashers are Flight1 or in fact NickN himself. Don't forget they are not afraid to pose as people to try and get what they need - see the FSX2P3D website to see what I mean. For me FTXG is a fantastic addition to P3D. GEX I'm sure was pretty good but deliberately bricking the software will still, for me, go down as the most ridiculous and a$$hole thing any developer has done in my time simming - no disclaimers or anything to warn people not versed in the EULA agreements and no refunds for those who made genuine mistakes here. Not only that, whatever you may say about John V of FTX, he always takes the time respond and answer questions or concerns - looking at NickN's recent forum posts and really strange rants, I know which developer I want to invest in and communicate with...that's the great thing, we have a choice!

Ipeefreely said...

I have never been so glad to get rid of that steaming pile of default-dogpoo called GEX

This is 2013 afterall, GEX is stuck in 2004

Mike said...

NickN has been controlling your sim for too long, you just didn't know it.

Mike said...

NickN has many many different personas, this has been proven many times over,

The fact that Nick is freaking out only underlines how successful FTXglobal is

It is to be expected that GEX will not like it :)

Cabnz said...

Just for your info, I'm not NickN and I don't own Gex.

JamesHongKong said...

Haha, that's what NickN would say... ;-)

Cabnz said...

Haha :)

Ryan said...

FTX copies textures into a folder and adds two land class folders. You back up your original textures when you install FTX, now explain to me what is so hard about using copy/paste to reinstall the old default textures and removing the land classes? FTX isn't taking over anything you big babies.

Red dog said...

NickN has just lost the plot with that post!! What has anyone done for asia, latin america, south africa in detail?
If you dont want to by the Orbx LC and run UTX its been stated thats fine, What a rant what an joke why would a competing company to GEX make files to help them out! !!
Im in no way affiliated with Orbx Just couldn't believe all the BS i read in that one post!! WOW NickN you mate are the joke!

Red dog said...

So the default textures were CONTROLLING too?

peter said...

wait till ORBX release the UTX and scenery tech replacements ,then nick will lose it big time ,in more ways than one .flight1 have been caught well off guard, maybe instead of wasting time and energy rubbishing P3d at every chance the should have spent the time improving their products ,instead most improvements have been as a disguise to cripple their product use in p3d
,but in my book the deserve all they loose ,flight1 instead of whining should just produce a superior product if they can

xavierp said...

Feel like I have thrown a big rock in the pond...
I was just wondering what John V's had to say regarding NickN comments on his product.

As far I understood, FTXGlobal modifies textures and autogen. I'd like to know if it will mess up with other addon...

that's all.

I think NickN has brought enough to the community to be respected and trusted.

On the other hand, I think Orbx is the best thing that happened to us since flytampa (flytampa being undeifited till this day fps wise).

Let's not make this a developer war... I just wanted an answer. then I'll make the choice as to wether get the product or not.

Just asking as my research have not helped me to
confirm nickn argument.
That's all

Long live both developpers.

Flight1, Aerosoft, orbx are among companies we couldn't live without in my very humble opinion

Thank you

My name is Nick and I'm an addict.

It's been 27 hours since my last anti-Orbx post using a pseudonym or fake account.

I have been trying to shake this addiction for over six years now but I just cannot stop. Please help me!

Unknown said...

Quite right. Flight1 have been caught with their pants down and now they don't like it. I got fed up with products like GEX and FEX as, quite frankly, their support for their product stops when you've bought it. Apart from the occasional update it seems that they neglect their products for far too long. With Orbx there are regular updates along with a lively community and a continuously expanding catalogue of add-ons. Orbx have also tried to implement FTXG alongside other products, why NickN has thrown his toys out of the pram I've no idea.

ps I am not NickN nor is my wife :-)

Todd said...

It's just poor taste for one developer to bash another and then lock the thread where this was all started. Competition is a good thing, at least I thought it was. I love Orbx and I really like FTX global, but not providing an uninstallr or at least provide instructipns on how to manually uninstall global was a bad oversight on Orbx's part. At least Jim and his crew are responsive to its customers and are doing something about it. Their customer support is second to none.

NickN said...

I'm NickN....and I approved this rant.

NicEn said...

I think the answer to this question lies in NickN having a rant and then LOCKING THE TOPIC, this means you have no right of reply

NickN's post is just built from lies, deceit and a real fear of being "put out to pasture"

Put your money were your mouth is and make something better...

chino said...

If orbx could'nt have included an uninstaller..perhaps that was intentional and a stratety of theirs....Oh and lets not forget that ftxg was supposed to be a whole product...but wait...if a stripped down version is released then we can milk the users by selling special lc areas. yeah good idea to bait and hook fsx users. I think nickn's comments have some validity but the ftxg groupies can accept some of it. why are y'all whinning cuz no dx10..no uninstaller...what other surprises are up coming. Well the ftxg bait has been cast and the openlc fish will be biting soon. this is better than deadlyest catch and will keep reeling in the ftxg groupies for a long time;;;

Todd said...

Chino, that is one of the most ignorant, uninformed statements I have ever read. Orbx did not include OpenLC because it decided that it would be better for users to have flexibility in using their product. Not to mention yje massive download size if it wete included. Including the OpenLC would mean those that already use UTX would have to uninstall it. Releasing Open lc separately now gives you a choice to install it in whatever region you want. And since they did change the way they released FTX Global, they adjusted the price accordingly. Perhaps you should be more pissed at Flight1 for charging so much to cover the entire world with GEX, since it is region-specific. By comparison, FTX Global is much, much cheaper.

So stop with your childish conspiracy theories. Orbx has been more than open about the changes they made in releasing FTX Global and OpenLC, and customer response has been very positive. Let's face it - Orbx has just bested GEX/UTX in quality and price.

I r Orbx fanboy...

chino said...

todd...it isn't as ignorant as offering an incomplete ftxg with no uninstall or dx10....right, the rush to get it to market. you obviously like jigsaw puzzles that you have to pay for each piece. individually..now thats really ignorant :)

you must not have read the many posts ftxg buyers around fsx forums who felt let down after seeing no uninstaller, no dx10 , fields on mountain sides and more. good on you for enjoying those issues.

Jesus christ, its like a "Days Of Our Lives" episode. Less bitching, more simming! Way too much drama these days in the sim world.

After reading some of these posts, its apparent there's a LOT of children in this hobby. I just broke my own rule by responding to a post like this, but after 24+ years of simming, I have never seen so much verbal diarrhea in my life.

I could understand if ORBX made a statement "we will not be including an uninstaller". But before letting wolves out the pen, let them respond to this! After all, its just a hobby!

cabnz said...

And don't forget - even the FranceVFR owner won't work with ORBX either. Look that up!
