Do you want dedicated forums?

[Your Thoughts] I have received quite a few requests from members wishing to join me and I thank all of you very much for your support! I do have quite a bit to sort out on the admin side of things and as I previously mentioned, my wife will be soon assisting me as well. If not for her support, I may have shut things down already lol! So rest assured, I will get back to you all in due time. Looking for a dedicated partner is not easy.

In the mean time, some plans have been put off such as the website. But the forum can still come soon. Quickly in fact. But my question is: do you want one? What do you want in a forum? Should I bother?

I have been talking with the guys as iFlySimX about working together as opposed to trying to generate up a forum from the ground up. The forum there is growing rather quickly and whereas I have been approached on promoting forums in the past, this one really shows a lot of promise. ADX dedicated forums can be hosted here. But if I decide to go this route, would would like to have in the forum? What would you want to see? As I start to make decisions on the next step of ADX, I would like to include you all as well. So please feel free to provide your feedback. I know there are many X-Avsim folks in our flock looking for a forum home where they don't have to worry about getting banned.
Anyway, provide me with your thoughts and in the mean time, check out the iFlySim forums and tell us what you think.

My personal opinion is that we don't really need another dedicated forum. Lots of forums already and for me it just dilutes the things that I like about this blog. All the pertinent news stories that I can quickly scan, the ability to click in to a given story and read more about it, and the ability to make a directed comment about that given topic. That's why I like this blog. I'd hate to see time taken away from managing that (which clearly is at a premium already) to manage the forums.

I think it is a good idea.

It will make easier to us to post not only opinions but news, reviews and whatever more. A place to talk about what we like.

But, it will change AirDailyX and surely give you more work. Whatever you decide will be fine. AirDailyX has grown, so perhaps it's time for a new step. Why not with iFlySimx.

If you are partnering with iFlySimX why don't you ask him to make a section in his forum just for ADX where people can post news, opinions, etc.

DAndre Newman said...

Indeed this is what we discussed. It would be an ADX dedicated section.

I agree with Aaron I like AirDailyX just as it is for the same reasons that Aaron gives. If I want a dedicated forum I can go to Avsim or Flightsim. I check AirDailyX every day for the latest news on upcoming releases, work in progress and then comment on that topic. Please don't change.

Guys the blog would not change at all....We would only make a section for AirDailyX. Its not like they would move the whole site to the forums....it would just be extra.

The content is much interesting than the way you choose to channel this.

I think that ADX needs to continue with unbiased opinions. If partnering with iFlySimX is the way, it's fine.

I'm all for it. A no-nonsense, less drama more info forum would be great!

I would also like a forum so that we can ask things like, "D'Andre, have you heard anything from ORBX regarding the status of Juneau?"

The forum would need to be controlled somehow because most of AVSim posts are useless. For example, "What are your three favorite add-ons? What is your least favorite add-on?" I like ADX because its a one-stop no-nonsense source for all things Flight Sim. If a forum can do that too; I'm all for it.

D'Andre, have you heard anything from ORBX regarding the status of Juneau?

question is how would you work with a new partner,s so soon, there are already lots of forums out there which seem to have their base crowd of simmers , you now have a very good and unusual formula ,myself I would like to see more honest reviews in the format that I have seen posted here, most important don,t rush into anything
all the best for the future

Peter, you are spot on. And yes, I am in no hurry. To date, not including Dom, we have had 4 people quit on us. Many think this blogging business is easy but sooner or later they realize it's not.

This is not a casual fun thing. It's a job that requires work. The question is, is it a job someone can enjoy doing everyday? My answer to that is no.

But there are a very slim few amount of people out there that could do this everyday and love it. But also not not get burned out in a month or 3 months or a year. To be able to keep going with it and evolve with it.

To have passion and the will to do quality posts and reviews. Because the simple 1 sentence post just won't cut it. There should really be passion involved.

That's the ideal partner here and I am quite sure such a partner will be very hard to find. So no rush. I can keep the turbines spinning.

Understood, but for me the point is even if it is hosted for them, there is still overhead in managing that. Why have a section of a forum that the primary point of contact for that content is not involved? A forum, wherever it is hosted, will take effort from the folks (folk) here to manage/respond that is already very limited.

A post was recently made that talked about how short staffed the blog is already to the point of its future being in question, do we really want to add even more overhead?

ofc you can put up a forum but I dunno.. I mean you got so many and this will definitely increase the workload which hinted you, quite heavy already. :\

you could put up moderators and stuff but you will still need to put some time in it.. especially in the beginning.

Well a forum would be nice if there is a way in which we can filter out all the crap and immaturity that tends to find itself on FS forums.

It can become very frustrating to read useless post upon useless post ad nauseum from immature users bickering about one another's competence or some idiot constantly spamming a forum about why FlyTampa cannot make KSEA. Oh there are so many examples everywhere, FSDT forums, Aerosoft forums, Avsim (especially). Sometimes I'm embarrassed to enjoy this hobby what with some of the company that it keeps.

Perhaps this response is harsh, but I think it needs to be said. Lord knows I can't say this on Avsim (lest the Gestapo ban me......)

Otherwise I would say no, don't have a forum, cause it will only ruin this site. Or weed out the immaturity somehow to keep this place professional and informative.

That is what AirDailyX is today, informative without the fat.

No keep it as is its simple and informative quick reference short blog on new stuff that's it, if I want a forum I go to avsim.

I think if some sort of account were required, and that bypassed the need for comment approval a lot of the immature comments would go away

DAndre Newman said...

Very true. But people tend to get discouraged when they have to log in everywhere they go...

But it will be compulsory with the website whenever I get it online...

I personally like AirDailyX the way it is. It's informative, intelligent, and impartial. The comments section under each article is a lot like a mini forum and it helps keep people focused on the topic at hand. I don't really know what a forum will accomplish other than distract from the excellent reviews, articles, and interviews. Interviews, by the way, are something I'd really like to see more of. Also, DAndre, have you thought about adding X-plane reviews to the mix? I don't own X-plane, but it seems to be getting more and more nice add-ons that are released or in the works (like a steam gauge Citation II and Saab 340, for example). It's a sim platform that has me more and more intrigued. Just a thought. In fact, you could possibly hire someone who does nothing but X-plane reviews.

DAndre Newman said...

Some very good points there Todd. I personally have 0 interest in X-Plane. Tried it and really did not like it at all. But if it did get covered here, this would require an XPL extraordinair to cover them as it would not make sinse for me to do so and I don't even have it installed on my drive.

But the other side is, would I upsed the majority of my readers by covering it? Even ASN had to create a separate site for X-Plane coverage.
