A comic is... a comic

Behind the story. I posted a few days ago another comic, figuring two well known companies. We have immediately received unformal complaining remarks from their CEOS. And, logically i suppose, we have decided to remove it. For the first time since the foundation of the blog.
I have reworked it with Taloux, our drawer. And here it is. Don't even ask for explanations. there is none. If this one has to be removed too, i will definitely resign from this blog.

Interesting.

I think it's fairly common knowledge that the moderating at "Avmime" has been leaving a bad taste in the mouth for quite some time now.

Never mind, the hobby is bigger than Avmime and the egoes of those who run it.

Let me make sure I understand this one - It's RR having TA as his hand puppet as far as managing their forums is concerned ?

The relations between some developers and a***m have never been a secret. But it got significantly worse in the last couple of years.

You only showed the truth and you're still doing it with the new one - well done ADX!

Keep it up!

No need to resign Dom.

If you don't stand up to bullies, they'll continue their behavior. It's as simple as that.

More people appreciate truth than whitewashed PC statements, even if they don't say it.

A little humility and humor is all we ask...
all the comics here are just right and funny...
it is also great to see personnalities of the hobby and just figure out who they are and go like ...oh yeah that's true...

I never seen an attack in those comics.... and i d be proud to be portrayed here...

Come on guys, you have to accept that when you get famous .... people talk about you and portray you...it's actually legal and there is nothing bad for you in this... all ads are good to be taken.

If this one gets taken out too ...I'll for once think, well.... we have the haters, the attackers, in this community and now we have the great faces of our hobby starting .... (see above)

Don't take life so seriously you'll naver get it out alive anyways.

Long live ADX.

When I seen the Previous comic, I felt sorry for AirdailyX. Not for putting it there, I just had a feeling that this would be the outcome. Now that's CENSORSHIP.

Some folks take this flight simulation thing a little too seriously, haha.

Yes I was wondering what on earth got Kosta (The author of the highly informative FSX tweak guide) kicked out of the forums.

I think it's a good thing that the place has gotten a bit less important now as most freeware developers have wised up to the fact that they should upload their work in other places as well, after seeing what happened with the hack (or 'sabotage')

I wish I knew what was going on.

Belisar said...

What now? Aren't we allowed to mention them even the comments? :D They should shut up and stop pretending to be anything more than what they are. They are becoming so full of themselves these days. What I do not understand, is why did you delete/modify that? Did not know that Kosta was kicked out(?). That is plain stupid considering his contributions. Anyways, you should put the comic back as it was. FS world, no matter if the captain likes it or not, is free speech and if he would like to say something, that's what the comment box is all about.

Tom Allensworth at Avsim will bully anybody he can to protect his little kingdom. Avsim has more internal politics and chest thumping than a small town courthouse.

Good riddance to them.

Anonymous said...

I would love nothing more than a thorough investigation of the Avsim 'hack'. Lies to raise money to buy new hardware and line their pockets.

When was the last time you had to buy a whole new computer because Windows crashed?

Nick said...

Whilst I'm no fan of Allensworth's attitude and manner on his forums, even less so that of his moderators - I think it's pretty silly to still be pedalling the hack conspiracy theory.

Given Avsim's popularity and site traffic there are far more effective ways to raise the money required than staging a hack and taking contributions from members - something they never actually asked for and happened spontaneously.

Anonymous said...

Where did the money go? Why did they take it if they didn't need it? If I recall it was a sum near $25,000...

Karl Varga said...

I like it Dom, very funny and so true. Allensworth seems like a smelly grey haired prick.
Those types of old folk that feel as if they demand respect because they think they are so knowledgeable and wise.

I rarely visit his pathetic site and forums anymore. When I look for news I come here. The company is so much more friendlier.

Mason Dominique said...

Thanks very much pals.

Thanks, although i cannot approuve direct insults again someone who has been dedicated to FS for a long time.

I am not reposting the previous comic unless we can all financially contribute to hire a lawyer and frankly, this is not the purpose.

The theorem is simple,
the larger and richer is the company,
the more it will want to protect its interests by any means including by freedom deprivation...

How do I remove myself from AVSIM? I am looking something through the settings, but I cannot find anything. I want to close my account both at the forums and at the download manager. I cannot be bothered to support even as a contribution to a number used in its promotion. This is turning into a propaganda machine, and we have had that where I come from and I cannot stand it even on a simple, insignificant forum. Just a principle issue. Any help greatly appreciated.

ALE said...

If you want out of avsim, you can just e-mail or PM a moderator. They have to remove an account on request of the account holder. Whether you can get them to delete all traces of your account successfully is another issue...

Kleitus said...

No I do not care about traces. I want them to remove me from the members list. I won't be number that fuels their propaganda. Anyways, wrote them. They are legally required to fulfill my request.

ALX WNT said...

It's not AVSIM's fault. It's your fault actually, you're forcing people to use AVSIM for simulation stuff. I said this before and want to repeat it again, you need to create your own forum for us. I'm also running 3 forums - not FS related - It's not difficult stuff, free forum software and server will do the thing.

We need a place where we can discuss simulation but also other stuff aviation related, i prefer this under your administration, i bet many adx readers will think the same.

Cheers

Nick said...

Where did the money go? It went to purchase and set up new servers. Is that really so incredible and hard to believe?

Why did they take it if they didn't need it? They *didn't* ask for it, it was given spontaneously.

Do you think they would fake a hack just to screw a measly $25,000 out of the users? Given the legal implications should they be found out the money involved was peanuts.

I don't like the way he runs his site and I don't like a few of his moderators, but I don't think he faked a hack to squeeze money out of his site's regular users.

"We have immediately received unformal complaining remarks from their CEOS. And, logically i suppose, we have decided to remove it"-Why did you remove it?

DAndre Newman said...

The complaints actually weren't the reasons. It was a change of decision on our part. Many didn't actually understand the content.

DAndre Newman said...

It's coming ALX but it will be in part of the actual website which requires time, work, and money. Be patient. It's coming.

when you posted the cartoon of the general with a hand up the a--e of the puppet ,that was what you believed to be the situation or you would not have drawn it ,just by altering the cartoon you can not hide your true thoughts ,also the with your posters how about a rule that developers posting have to identify the fact ,else you will be taken over by ?

madpuppy said...

It is a bit of a delicate matter--not with avsim of course, but with developers. If they feel offended they might not be as inclined to give interviews or sneak previews.

Satire/caricature is a balancing act, not that anyone doesn't already know this. As for this particular cartoon--it's funny.

And while this is not happening here--I hope ADX never becomes a site where 'reviews' simply become commercials for the developer. Like avsim. It's not honest.

p.s. The more the CEOS complain the better the cartoon is :)

ALX WNT said...

Happy to hear this, very good news indeed !

JamesDT said...

I don't know anything about the internal or external politics at the site in question. I do know that I have learned more there than anyplace else in the FS world. I've never been disrespectful, or disrespected. I've made quite a few web friends there. It's a private site. The owner can run it like he wants. He's doing something right, because it's the #1 FS site on the planet. I don't understand this American obsession to undermine success. I guess there are many people who like to elevate themselves by stepping on others.

DAndre Newman said...

It's not the comic as you can clearly see is the same if you saw the previous one.

The changes from the original are that we are not using copyrighted corporate logos as done in the previous version and the writing was modified to something readers could understand and more identify with.

We had several comments both published and not published that denoted many readers simply did not understand the satire Dom was trying to convey.

Neither version of the comic was or is intended to offend. It's satire. But as satire goes, always someone will get offended or will disagree. Be that as it may, it's not the reason it was changed.

What you choose to believe further is purely the inception of your own imagination. But I have thoroughly explained our rationale.

HenryS said...

ADX has every right to publish a satrical cartoon about any aspect of the flight sim industry/community. Personally I found the cartoon humorous but took a minute to "get it" because of the developer reference.

That said, I agree with everything JamesDT wrote about the "Avime" site. Unless you want to know about CFS3, it is the best site for factual information about products, hardware, and techniques. The moderation is relatively stringent but it prevents the little boy histronics that are so common at other forums. "Avime" is the only site at which I feel completely comfortable asking a question or giving advice.

Nick said...

The busiest forum at Avsim is the PMDG one, and I'd bet that forum draws an *awful lot* of traffic to Avsim thus giving Mr Randazzo a lot of influence, hence the cartoon above. It would be a huge blow for Avsim if PMDG were to leave and set up their own support forum.

Avsim can be ok until you say something Tom Allensworth or one of his minions doesn't like - then you'll be publically chastised in a very condescending manner and banned leaving you no way to respond. This is exactly why so many useful posters have moved on or been driven away from the Avsim forums.

Avsim's MSFS forums used to be buzzing with activity, every day there would be lots of genuinely useful and informative posts by many well-informed and intelligent people.

Compare the MSFS forums of 2005-2006 with the ones today - the quality of the discussion has dropped dramatically. The X-Plane forum there has seen a surge of use, but mainly by about half a dozen or so users who like to tell us how good XPX is versus FSX ad nauseum - see the recent one where a poster rather breathlessly tells us how absolutely awesome XPX scenery is with the autogen from Simheaven and how it's just as good as the forthcoming FTX Global... I remember a couple of years ago the same poster telling us how absolutely AWESOME (this guy likes to use caps a lot) FSX was and how he's found the Holy Grail of flight simulation and he'll never need another flight sim ever again.

Basically in the last six to seven years the Avsim forums have gone from being a centre of knowledge and exchange of information to being a place full of utterly inane conversation and bully boy moderators. Just in fairly recent times we've lost Bojote and Chock from the Avsim forums, and of course Kosta was driven out over the ridiculous P3D EULA debate - and was the target of a nice character assassination from SpiritFlyer in the process.

Observing Avsim over many years and watching the ebb and flow of discussion there, it's apparent that criticism of certain developers was off limits and would quickly result in a lock or ban, yet other developers were fair game. Even so far as creating an unofficial forum for one large developer where everyone could stick the boot in, even including the "community manager".

Reviews at Avsim have come under the spotlight as well, with some questioning just how impartial the reviews can be when the site relies on advertising revenue from the makers of the very same products. Anyone remember the review of the Captain Sim 757 a few years back?

The news at Avsim? Tell you what, compare the news here at ADX and what's on the front page at Avsim. They are worlds apart. Interesting that today saw the release of Orbx Scotland, probably one of the biggest releases of the summer. It was reported here within minutes yet there is no mention of it on the Avsim front page. Orbx don't advertise on Avsim (as far as I'm aware). Coincidence? Don't worry though, Avsim didn't miss the huge news that Flightmap for Android has received an update for P3D.

The real key to Avsim's popularity is the file library, that's what drew most people to Avsim to begin with and it's still their biggest (and perhaps only remaining) asset.

Now, I'm very wary when I hear that ADX is going to start a full website and forums. You guys are already on most developers' radars now and are getting more and more attention. As your popularity grows you are going to need a bigger website and are going to generate more traffic. You're going to have to pay for all of that, and it's most likely going to come from advertising. Advertising paid for by the same people whose products you are reporting on and reviewing.....

Ryan said...

I don't know, the "we have lost everything sorry guys" and then after a bunch of donations "we have found the library hallelujah!" is fishy to me. Perhaps not asking for donations was part of then plan, knowing full well people would probably donate anyway. It is a good way to dodge legal problems.

...and i thought u.s. had freedom of press? whatever happened to the amendments??

Anonymous said...

Soes anyone know what happened to James Chams? He was a troll on the FSDT forum & others. He was a test pilot for the CIA or something.

HenryS said...

Avsim is a private website. It is not the "press". I suspect your knowledge of US constitutional law is very superficial. There is no unlimited or unqualified "freedom". Slander, threats, and libelous speech are not covered under any freedom.

HenryS said...

I find myself agreeing with Nick about the future of ADX. You will lose a lot of your "insolent" if your incomes decline because of advertisers leaving. Perhaps it is better to remain more outside.

DAndre Newman said...

Lucky for us, we all do quite well financially. So whereas the advertising is a big help, it's our passion that drives us not money. remember, advertising on ADX is only about slightly over a year, the blog is over 3 and a half years running.

Besides, advertisers that approach us are well aware of our modus- operandi long before they sign up with us.

So don't be too skeptical of our future. The changes we have made thus far have been very minor.

We don't want to become like AVSIM. We simply need a site because we are too limited with the improvements we want to do and Blogger is very limiting.

As for the forums, the purpose is to allow more freedom to the community. But there will be rules.

Thank you AirdailyX for exposing the dark, rotten, filthy side of AVSIM

I was banned for 60 years and publicly named and shamed by Spiritflyer (Stephen) for pressing the +1 button on a comment made by another person

AVSIM is a corrupt old boys club, stealing money from all the idiots who donate it, and if you are a payware company and you dont pay Tom his 'fees', you do not get ANY exposure, and if you refuse to comply then they start to trash-talk your product at every possible occasion

Since that day I was banned I have refrained from purchasing ANYTHING that has a support forum on AVSIM, or a requirement to use AVSIM to ask a question

So be warned.

I too was banned from Avsim, for making a post critical of PMDG. Not an attack, just a critique. The thread got a ton of replies, 50+, more in support of what I had written. The post was deleted (not locked, but actually deleted so there would be no record that it was ever made), and then I was banned without warning or anything. I haven't been back since, and I haven't missed it either.

Did you not see the word Anonymous? That comment was left this morning. Enough of the BS. Anonymous comments written today and thereafter are being published but deleted as a reminder.

Anonymouse said...

Oh ok, just odd that it was published and then removed as opposed to not being published at all. If that's the reason then I support wholeheartedly. But a suggestion, if you guys remove the post you should say why so to make clear whether it is or isn't content-based censorship. Content-NEUTRAL censorship is fine with me.

Unfortunately, there is little to be done about avsim, nor can we do anything about it. Avsim can operate however they wish. Also Henry, I think what anon meant was avsim does not have the right to control what air daily posted as an innocent cartoon, although airdaily chose to remove it themselves.

Anonymouse said...

Well in fairness I don't think Abacus needs any more negative exposure. Although Avsim did post two flattering reviews of their 787???
