Where oh where to begin… Well for starters, I have just had
my first experience with Flight which lasted about... well, a while let’s just
say. I did the silly missions and listened to the instructor chick play her ukulele
thing. Honestly, my impression of this platform is simply put. It’s a game. But
do I like it? Well, in a word, yes. And I believe it is this feeling of mine
that Microsoft was banking on. They are playing on my love for flying, my love that
is… for flight.
Honestly, I don’t know if I should feel excited to have a new flying game or to feel as if I am being taken advantage of. Because Microsoft knows we will be attracted by the beautiful visuals and exciting aircraft. Perhaps their thought process was: the new person will be attracted to a new cool state of the art flying game while the advanced flight simmer will come because they love their flying so much, they won’t be able to say no.
Well I feel as if I am at a crossroads here. I purchased the
Take on Helicopters game last year thinking and hoping it would be a cool realistic
helicopter game only to find that there were no clickable buttons or switches
in the virtual cockpit. I could barely even read the dials. I totally wasted my
money there. ToH was simply a game and nothing more. So, I hung it up in the
dark recesses of one of my 3 1TB external harddrives likely to never be seen
again.
With Flight, I already know it’s a game. It’s very much what
I expected. What arouses my fear about Flight is its true potential. Now don’t
get me wrong, ToH can very much be made into more of a simulator or “realistic game”
and if Bohemia Interactive choose to do that, then I’ll be back on board. But
with Flight, I already know it can quickly become a simulator. The default
graphics is not bad at all but it needs serious improvement. For those of you
who played the demo, just imagine REX, Ground Environment, Ultimate Terrain, FS
Global, and add-ons from the likes of FSDT, ORBIX, FlyTampa, Drzewiecki Design
and Blueprint Simul… Oops no not
them!! But just imagine all the high quality developers going to work on Flight.
It really would be the simulation that could possibly make me fully fly above
FS9. But even if these developers did improve upon Flight, there is still the
900 pound gorilla in the room, and that is the Windows Live Marketplace.
There is honestly no way in hell I’ll pay just to get to fly
into a region in order to then pay again for the 3rd party add-ons
to go with it. Honestly, what are they thinking over at Microsoft? I need to
pay to fly into other parts of the world?? Damn the freedom of FS9 and FSX look
good right now. There is just no way will I agree to this no matter how well it
looks or how high my FPS gets (which was very high).
So honestly my fear has turned into sadness. Because I know just
how great this platform can be. I know that is very likely that it might be
great. But I also know for me, it never will be. Not as long as I have to pay
for such stupid things, and know that I will not be able to spend hours combing
the sites for great freeware for it. Microsoft had built a Great Wall and as a
simmer I need to pay tolls, and fees to get through that wall only to find
another wall to pay to get over. And as a developer, knowing I have to pay and
get licenses to develop for it only to be sold by Microsoft, a multibillion
dollar company that will cut into my profits. I am not a developer but you get
my point.
Many developers signed NDA’s from the very start and it
honestly seems that most are not happy with this. Where I am shocked is that
the people over at AVSIM seem to be pleased with Flight. Did they sell their soul
to the proverbial devil that is Microsoft? Microsoft is paying AVSIM to
advertise on their site… Flight, a platform that very well could see the end to
the likes of AVSIM should it grabs hold of the FS market. I am quite very much
confused here. But I digress.
Microsoft Flight is a game. And as a game I like it. But it
stops there for me. If FSDT can make their Hawaii airports avail for Flight with
GSX or whatever then perhaps I’ll pay for the entire state of Hawaii so I
actually can perform reasonable flights. But ultimately it’s my budget and the
fact that I despise Flight for incorporating the Windows Live Marketplace into
its modus operandi that will limit me from going any further with this game. As
I continue to enjoy my completely free world in FS9 with my PMDG 747 at FSDT
KJFK, or enjoy a nice Cessna cruise through the misty fjords in FSX. Only one
thing is sure. Flight is not the future for me.
So Mr. Mathijs Kok, it looks like you are back on deck!
Thanks for reading guys. Dom and I are very grateful to all
of you who visit every day and we will continue to get better to serve you
better no matter what platform you prefer.
Cheers!

Don't be fooled. Its amusing for a couple of days. I was a beta tester & liked it as a game. After a while, FLIGHT will be joining Take on Helicopters.
Good DLC will take years to come. I doubt they(microsoft FLIGHT) are still around after 12 months.
I've not bothered to even re-loaded the extra DLC they gave me for free. I just checked out the release version to see if anything had changed. It had, they made it slower.
It'll be un-installed soon
Best MS flight review so far! I too was a beta tester....:( I uninstalled Flight after day 1...& never looked back..:)
Great review, pretty much sums it up
AVSIM cannot be trusted anymore, they are just a MS-advertising bot, and do not care about actual flight simulation
You know it's funny, there is a topic about this on the AVSIM forum: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/364079-why-is-avsim-supporting-flight/
I find it very interesting indeed as it seems that AVSIM finds Flight to be a simulator. I'm sure this has nothing to do with them being paid by Microsoft.
Also, please read the Review by Mathijs Kok on ASN, it's a VERY good read!!

The Microsoft censorship machine is like North Korea.
Negative Youtube comments are not allowed. Ratings are also disabled.
They convinced AVSIM to remove all negative posts. I saw 30-40 posts removed today for doing nothing other than questioning FLIGHT. Several users just had their accounts deleted. Its horrible in there. Its just a possy of sad, out of touch, old men sucking up to Microsoft. Pathetic.
AVSIM is a old relic anyway. Their mainpage looks like shit & provides a lazy outdated way of presenting FS News.
Go AIRDAILYX
Its corporate greed against- a hobby of more than 30 years.
Many people will find it easy to support a group of corporate monkeys and make others become pawns of mediocrity like Flight.
To the one above: Well, if you don´t like Avsim, jost got somewere else! We certaily don´t need people like you!
The Main page is just perfect, clear and tidy. There had been a try to change the layout but after massive protest from the members if was reverted back to the original one.
Greetings from an AVSIM staff member.
thinks those that have NO clue About AVSIM should shut their pie hole. Advertising dollars do NOT equal a positive review. Yes we posted advertising and yes we're paid for it. Advertising is advertising and we'll gladly take money.
As for being a bot or out of touch? LOL OK, clost to 2million forum posts and several HUNDRED thousand members I guess we're out of touch. lol
But I am sure you will remove this comment from your site for being against your comments right?
As for the webpage...funny, the site I am looking at as I compose this uses the same 3-column setup as AVSIM does.
And finally, the review, was by a 3rd party independent reviewer. There will be more to come, and several of the staff are AGAINST how it reads as well. So unless you have ALL the facts, don't say anything. (yeah, right, like that will happen)
All very interesting statements indeed. In the end, if there are growing numbers of fans for Flight out there, at least they will have a home at AVSIM which is in my opinion one of the most important FS resources out there regardless of how the homepage looks. ((-D'))
AVSIM used to be great. I used to love their file library & owe them thanks for hosting TBs of great freeware.
I rarely go there anymore. After visiting this week to check in on FLIGHT, I was horrified to see how the mods treat people.
Its nice they are making money from protecting Microsoft, but if they keep up this ignorant heavy handed censorship, pretty soon the mods will be taking almosts themselves.
I never saw anything that deserved moderating but still saw lots of moderator edited comments, red text & even re-named titles. Its gone too far. AVSIM need to relex. The forum arguments are what use to make avsim worth reading. Now its just people agreeing with each other.
Censorship is never a good idea. Especially not for trivial issues like politely disliking a video game.
AVSIM, you lost a reader.
The guy that did the AVSIM review was a Microsoft Beta tester. He is a big fan of everything Microsoft say & do. This is obvious by reading his comments in the FLIGHT beta forum.
AVSIM will have known this. He was clearly picked to provide a biased review, pleasing Microsoft & attracting their advertising dollars.
Shame on AVSIM.
Ahhh, I just saw the Avsim mainpage covered in Flight commercials. Its now clear why the mods are brutishly protecting Microsoft Flight.
All that bull about creating a friendly environment for new users. haha, lol.
Thanks,
Bill W
My own first impression after three hours of gameplay with Flight:
I like the graphics and the landscape scenery. Clearly also a superior graphics engine compared to FSX, making use of modern graphic rendering techniques, resulting in great water effects and high framerates. For now, that's about it on the positives, looking at it from a simulator perspective.
It is a game, not a simulator. At least for now. I'll check back in a year with great antiticipation, because the potential is there. For now it will rest stashed away on the drive.
Instead, I'll crank up FSX with all the great add-ons over my home area, with a sigh of relief, and many grateful thoughts of the amazing work from the scenery/aircraft making community that make an amazingly life-like flying experience possible.
Flight has potential, but is hanging on the edge as far as a future as a simulator goes.
I actually donated money to AVSIM when they were hacked a few years ago. Now, I feel like the CIA did after training Bin Laden.
The way their mods have acted this week is disregardful.

This first paragraph was hilarious!
Best review I read so far about Flight and I am also glad somebody else has the same feelings about Take on Helicopters like I do.
By the way, I guess it is a know fact by now - Project Microsoft Flight was canceled.
