Microsoft FLIGHT beta demo

Very interesting testimonies about some simmers who have just tested the demo.

Might work out good if there was a Windows Phone 7 version. Oh wait, its the FSX engine which is too bloated & no one bought a windows phone. Poor Microsoft. Seriously, this is AWFUL. Microsoft wasted our time.

I just installed FLIGHT as it was released last night to beta testers. I've flown it now for about 4 hours. At first you are forced to complete 2 missions in the ICON A5. These are very short ,very simple. Not very impressive. After completing these mission, the option to do Free Flights finally appears. You can choose starting locations, very basic weather & time options. Locations are limited to Hawaii. However, its only ONE island in Hawaii, you have to buy the remaining Hawaiian islands. Overall, its extremely dumbed down. It plays better on a Xbox360 controller than my 1000bux controls. Visuals are slightly better than FSX, not much to write home about. The autogen shadowing is nice. But, many features from FSX are missing. Theres NO AI traffic, No Jets, No Helicopters, No road traffic, No water reflections. No backwards compatibility & worst of all, No Addons from quality guys like Orbx PMDG. Its a Ipad game at best. I'm very disappointed. After 4 hours, I'm bored of it.

Shame... This is what happens when money becomes more important than a passion. But - creating a passion brings money back, so in my opinion X-Plane 10 has now a unique chance to be the first. Especially if they come out with a simple software to convert FSX sceneries. Stanislaw

Well someone just blew their NDA...

I'm not quite sure what MS is trying to do. It's certainly not a sim and as a free-to-play "Freemium" game it looks rather pale in comparison to its closest competitor, World of Warplanes. MS Flight look destined to fail.

Why cant they make another simulator? i dont get why ace studios shut their doors. Microsoft/ Ace have such a large trusting community behind them and now they have not only pissed everyone off and insulted everyones intelligence with this bullshit but theyve lost any potential support from many people who decided to switch to x plane because although i personally think laminar research sucks and no matter how hard they try x plane will never feel as alive and fun as microsoft, laminar research is the only one that gives a f*** about flight sim and training aids. Screw you microsoft.

Some feedback from Microsoft in the Beta Forums. They have their heads up their asses......

-------------------------------------------
With the closed beta nearing the end of its second week, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you – the fans and the critics alike – for helping us improve Microsoft Flight! Key members of the Flight team are keeping an attentive eye on the discussion boards, and we’re sifting daily through a veritable mountain of telemetry, survey results, suggestions, questions, and bug reports. The rest of us are actively engaged in what’s coming next (though we won’t say what that is just yet!) and, where possible, are incorporating what we hear from you into that work.As expected, the January 4th, 2012 press release stirred a great deal of passion within the Flight Simulator community. Even so, the media – and even members of that very community – see the long-term benefit of the “flight for the masses” philosophy, and are excited to see what we’ve done and where we’re going.

To shed some light on where we stand now, we will present some interesting numbers gleaned from your participation in the beta.

Player Activity

Landing challenges and gold rush are the big winners when it comes to what you love to do most in Flight. Over half of all beta participants have played the first Icon landing challenge, and nearly 10% of those have actually managed to get gold.

The Wind Farm gold rush has been very popular as well, with almost a third of beta participants trying their hand at that challenge. Even so, nearly twice as many players have managed to successfully complete the Hilo Bay run. Less than 1% of you have managed to actually get the gold in either of these challenges, so congratulations to you if you’re one of the elite!

On average, beta participants have put in approximately 3 hours of gameplay each. We’ve also seen a growing number of multiplayer sessions, including several with more than 10 players.

Graphics, Configuration and Performance

Over 50% of players are flying with graphics at High or Maximum, which reaffirms the inevitable reality that visual appeal is an important factor when it comes to gaming. Even so, the average reported frame rate is over 40 fps. This highlights the development team’s concerted effort to ensure that the high visual quality did not come at the cost of performance.

Surveys

If you haven’t already done so, please browse the handful of surveys we’ve made available on the Microsoft Connect site. These surveys are a great way for you to provide us with structured feedback on a wide range of topics related to Flight, so we encourage you to participate.

Conclusion

As you may already know, Microsoft Flight had a booth set up at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re looking forward to welcoming another wave of beta participants from that event.

Check back here for regular updates on the status of the Flight beta. If there’s anything you’d like to see covered in these highlights, please send a mail to msflight@microsoft.com

Thank you again for your participation, and keep on flying!

The Microsoft Flight Team
