...ugleee-lah...totally NOT Malaysia...not even close. South east asian architecture is unique...you can't "import" structures from other parts of the world (read - the west) and expect 'em to work....go there...look..then call this something else...just don't call it Malaysia
Right because the default autogen your have now is more accurate looking.
I guess it should be called autogeneric so people stop complaining. all you are meant to see is lots of buildings in areas that have lots of buildings in real world with a few that are landmarks. What, you are going to drive a bus through the streets? or fly your airplane?
IMHO - No, all the FTXGlobal screenies I've seen suggest the Textures and Autogen are better than default & GEX... Again...Its never going to look realistic!
...you got my point..and I was not trolling at all...if asia looks like europe and europe looks like N.A. what's the point of a world view at all...why not drop KDEN in for KLIA and be happy...and why not just buy Ms Piggy a new tube of lipstick and re-invent the old gal... ...the point I'm trying to make is you can't cover a mistake with another mistake and make it go away it just doesn't work.
But you are still missing the point of the product. It's not intended to bring 100% realism to any given area. It's intended to make it look more realistic than the FSX default scenery. If everyone can remember, default FSX is a desert in vast areas of the globe where there isn't desert in real life. If everyone can remember, default ground textures, even in lush areas, are bland and unrealistic. This scenery, in my view, is not a focus on autogen or getting every bit of Earth perfect, it's about making the Earth look more like it should (albeit with faults, but these faults are easier to live with than default FSX). Going back to the Italy topic, people are griping about autogen, which yes, isn't perfect, but look at the ground. It's not the Great Italian Desert which is what default FSX does portray. If you are going to nitpick over the small details, then no, this isn't a product for you. I on the other hand, will gladly take this over default, despite the minor autogen or texture errors, it still is light years ahead of default.
It seems pointless to have current autogen that doesn't portray the rice fields of Asia for example with new autogen that still doesn't correctly portray rice fields etc.
The whole point of replacing the autogen surely must be to correct such mistakes and put in place valid and regionally appropriate autogen.
So far many of the FTX Global screenshots have shown a poor implementation of these autogen replacements outside of Europe and North America. If I think of their Johannesburg screenshots alone, well it seems totally off!
Dear Annonymous, It looks, Way better than the Default so If it hurts you so much don't get it. It is honestly that simple. These people are trying to help us get a better FS experience and all you do is lament. Jeez man, stop taking FSX so serious, and understand that you will never get 100% accuracy. Please go outside and take a breather.
I'm not missing your point at all...You are not understanding how the FSX landclass system works, or how it calls textures...hence I pointed you to the announcement thread which pretty much spells it out...
We can't expect a standard payware quality on each FTXG city. That's definitely not the purpose! Many editors are already working on Cities sceneries. FTX GLobal will just add a new basic texture layer to replace the old FSX defaut layer, built... 6 years ago. Dom ADX
I hear you Dom, but many here have a valid point. An example:
If I take off from WSSS Singapore and the autogen around the airport still looks like I'm taking off from a European airport, then what's the point?
Surely the point in replacing autogen textures would be to give them regional authenticity and help increase the level of immersion...after all the immersion is what keeps us hooked to this hobby ;-)
Someone was asking about rice paddies on the Orbx forum and was given the dictionary definition and nothing else. Nice....
I'm not expecting perfection from this by any means, and a lot of it looks terrific, but Asia has me a little concerned. Doesn't even the default feature paddy farms?
Do you really think that these people are trying to help us get a better FS experience and thats all? So it is going to be a freeware add-on? I will certainly install it!
We don't remember default textures and desert textures... because we use UTX, we installed a service pack and many of us use other texture-related applications.
Guys, in my opinion the product is intended not to make a revolution on the market but to make good money from it. That is not something wrong at all, but we should be aware of that. The whole ORBX strategy and marketing is a bit tricky - FLOWs features (many airports have such animations without naming them Flow), 1, 2 or 5cm airport (while only few textures are in that quality and many other payware airports have comparable graphics) etc. The revolution would be to make the global aerial scenery, which is currently almost impossible to make in a quality that virtual pilots would expect. There are several add-ons making similar things to what FTX-Global will offer though.
I personally believe from the very beginning, that the core idea of this product was not to enchance the FS world but to have a great income from it. I am sure they will be succeeded in that and I am glad about it, because some of those guys are very tallented developers. I am however not excited about this particular product simply because from a real world pilot perspective, it will not bring FS very much closer to reality, although it might give some more fun to end users (and screenshot makers).
I don't think anyone should critisize the quality of this product at all. What might be wrong about it is the core idea... But lets wait for the release. After the release it would be possible to compare some FTX-Global cities with UTX+FSGlobal+FScene or Ground Environment product series (also divided into regions).
There is just too much ignorance shown by people posting here. FTX Global is just a GEX competitor but at less than half the price and using a single installer. I have not heard Orbx call this "revolutionary" or a "game changer". Those words have mainly come from people on various forums, not Orbx. If you bother to create a forum account at the FTX forums you will see JV posting almost daily to answer most questions in a polite and restrained manner especially given some of the huge expectations people have from the product.
Most of the comments here at ADX border on hysteria mainly based on completely not understand how FSX landclass works and completely failing to remember just how badly other products like FScene and GEX tried and have failed at giving us a good set of textures for a plausible worldwide coverage. If anyone can get close to doing that, it's the guys at Orbx.
I agree completely. Many here make very valid points indeed. We all agree on the common ground that texture replacement (even if nothing else) is the primary reason for this product's purpose. But, if we take tropical Asia as an example (there are a few screenshots in Malaysia and the Phillipines to go with. The above-mentioned Singapore lies very close by), just the green colouring of the foliage is completely wrong...more like northern Europe or another temperate region rather than the brighter lush greens of the palm forests and rainforests that cover this entire region. Surely, they could take another look at that, at least, and tweak the green and get the tree type right, for they have it right in their existing libraries for tropical Australia and its airports. This would be a relatively simple thing but give a huge impact towards feeling you are in Asia and not a temperate region. Architecture autogen might be a little harder but if that was changed, I would say job done for the product, completely fit for purpose now, thank you very much ORBX (maintains your standards of quality) and please take my credit card now. If nothing else, please just get the greens of the trees right and throw the wet rice paddies in if you can. As it stands, for anyone who has visited or lives in Singapore and Malaysia or other regions of Asia knows that this is nothing like the textures of the region, Gex currently has closer-to-reality textures/tress/greens for this region and others (check them out and see for yourselves), and flying out of WSSS in the 777 will be like taking off from somewhere in Europe. The only 1 thing right are the Petronas towers. Pleas, please do this simple fix...I really want to be able to justify buying FTX Global and to install it but it needs to at least do this basic job for me to uninstall gex. If you can, I most certainly will. Each to their own though.
I agree with a lot of what you say but I feel the above comments are largely written in the spirit of being constructive and that you may be being a little over-sensitive and emotional and not seeing any room for improvement in order the product to be fit for purpose stated without having over-expectation or using any particular terms (wherever they have come from) or impossible feats of development. Just one very simple example talked about is the South-East Asia textures (we all agree, and JV would confirm that regional textures are more than in the remit and purpose of the FTX Global product): Those of us who regularly visit or live in the region and even those that don't know that even the green colours used for the tree textures are nothing like (not plausible)the palm trees all over the area which are a more tropical, brighter green due to the Sun's radiation and that if we can take another look and be really honest (emotions aside) even GEX has these much much better and closer to the real textures (as you yourself say, "plausible")and colours. There are limitations to FSX landclass for other issues, yes of course, but not this one for GEX seems to have easily made different tree type/colours more correctly for distinct regions, at least based on continent so it is definitely possible to at least get this right, especially when it makes such a visual difference and is the actual stated reason for the product (texture replacement). Not asking for any more or any less and that is by no means a bridge too far. A lot of us want nothing more than FTX Global but it must at least do better than GEX on this front, not just default, so we can bin GEX and buy what in other ways is a much better, simpler product upon which more accurate landclass can be installed (perhaps from ORBX extra packs themselves and/or others). I just want the basics right so I can justify replacing GEX (many do I would imagine), not miracles. What's wrong with many more sales from the many they'll make). They are so frustratingly close to an ideal product...AaaaaHHH! The balance just needs a little tip/nudge. Please fix this small issue at some point ORBX. Really would be great...and just inadvertently be a "game-changer" anyway, simply by doing what it says on the tin better. The rest can be done by all developers, including ORBX later. The planet is a very very big place. There is so much more development scope waiting everywhere than we sometimes delude ourselves with. Cheers!
We're making rice paddy and asian villages and town texture sets as we speak. We're only showing alpha build shots which have warts in them for sure. But people are clamouring for screenshots so we're obliging. I think we'll throttle back on the screenshots now because we have not yet completed all texture assets and also we're making a lot of adjustments to the base world landclass to fix obvious issues MS left us with in the sim.
Just to be clear: we know that some shots in Italy, Asia etc show inappropriate LC and those do not reflect the final product. We are confident that upon release those areas will be visited by many customers and you'll be able to make your own mind up as to how we've done.
You need to remember that FTX Global is just the base pack. It does not claim nor profess to be a totally accurate solution for the entire planet. We only claim to offer you FTX textures across the whole world, but in fact we're going much further than that by adding a zero-FPS hit night lighting system, new autogen textures, a substantial amount of brand new FTX textures and a complete re-work of worldlc.bgl to fix glaring deficiencies in the default FSX LC.
All of which has been explained ad infinitum over the past months but it seems some folks like to spring to conclusions about products in alpha stage, rather than to wait until it can be judged on its release merits. Take a deep breath, wait a month or so and you can make your own mind up. Meantime, we have plenty of work to do still :)
That's the most perfect news I think a lot of us were waiting and keeping fingers tightly crossed to hear for us to be able to uninstall GEX (to be able to say Gex was a pricey investment at the time that has now been surpassed & is finally outdated)and jump on board FTX Global by the quality of ORBX. Thank you so much for your quick and informative response regarding the Asian and other regional textures, landclass, foliage/rice paddy textures etc and thank you so much for listening and taking note of all of us as you keep proving to be doing a fair bit these days. On hearing of your current works/plans/intentions I for one now think I should be convinced of the product's merits post-alpha and should be able to get FTX Global as soon as its released. Really excited now that I can build an FTX-textured world with FTX regions, FTX airports and cityscapes/POIs and a few well-selected quality add-ons from other developers! That's all I wanted to hear so thanks so much for the balanced and uplifting response. I appreciate it can be frustrating and perhaps repetitive (though there's subtle but very convincing info in your last response alone) for you guys too and when we all communicate it really seems to work out win/win for enthusiasts and developers together in this constructive relationship (ORBX is certainly showing maturity and goodwill these days in that light - speaks a thousand more unnecessary words!). I'm really enjoying collecting your masterpieces and how your product quality keeps pushing at the limits and I will put my money where my mouth is in encouraging and supporting you in this endeavour, I really will). Sincerely, do please get back to the incredibly hard and difficult work we know and appreciate you're doing and the very best of luck from many of us with it all and on showcasing a great and dare I say it, game-changing, product on release date! Thank you for the great news about the current work on more localised/regional textures/autogen/landclass in the upcoming base and additional packs. They sound like they're definitely for me.
Thanks JV. Take as long as you like in getting right, as it is intended to be for release-version! Appreciate the update on better textures in some regions.
Oh, and we won't get it 100% right first time. We never do (we're human and have foibles too). But by now everyone should know we always patch, service pack, enhance and fix our products post-release probably more than most FS developers do. We never take your money and ignore our products afterwards, it's not part of our philosophy.
You're welcome JV! Take all the time you need & really don't worry about the 100% thing. You're absolutely right...You are absolutely only human & so we should all remember & respect this & understand that not a single 1 of us never has made/will make more than 1 mistake in our human imperfect lives.
Here here to your philosophy too! There's nothing better than a developer who shows such attributes & in the last 6 months or so since I personally returned to FSX after a few years necessary absence, I've been awestruck to see the general progress made in the flightsim industry, learned of the very existence of companies like Orbx & have since been closely following Orbx & steadily buying up as much of the fantastic variety of sceneries as expendable income allows month to month. Can't help myself as each new scenery & idea (Global) just happens to be so damn compelling & gorgeous. May take a little while but look forward to being able to add the majority of it if things continue to evolve this way. Few mistakes may actually let me catch up as only discovered Orbx recently. But certainly not too recently to note for myself exactly the philosophy you describe. In my experience, its true to every word as many of us know. Much as this all sounds so very "sucking up" to many, I'm only stating my opinion of what I feel to be my experience, I have nothing further to gain at all but to encourage & thank any developer when they really do something so right for all of us as well as look after their business. Many find it such a struggle to achieve this so well & to make it feel so seamless (for it's no easy feat to make any business succeed while looking after customers so well & as ethically as Orbx actually does). That's a great thing! Anyone who buys Orbx scenery knows this for themselves. I'm not saying there aren't any other developers who don't do a great job too but the post is about Orbx, FTX Global & all the merits/opinions associated. I know that I buy every Orbx product with a lot of confidence, joy & anticipaton, knowing that everything is/will be so well supported on their forums, patched whenever necessary for compatibility or feedback of problems/big inaccuracies or whatever else (often more than once for new issues/improvements), even multiple enhancements when new skills/techniques are acquired. Lets not forget the expanding/varied freeware range which is even enhanced whenever it becomes possible. This is the philosophy, business ethics, attitude that attracts me to Orbx products & makes me feel secure in knowing anything I choose to install from Orbx is money well invested. That's the bottom line. Enough said (& enough "sucking up" Hahaha. But once in a while, the truth or one's opinion really needs voicing when it needs voicing. Orbx or Global doesn't need advertising. Can't wait for Global & a planet to explore/fly in, "foibles" & all please JV", no worries, & all its future maintenance, corrections, service packs, enhancements & evolution. Necessary in any addon but not to be expected by just any developer by any means. Thanks for bearing with me, if indeed you did guys (no worries if not, just needed getting off my chest if nothing else). Went on far longer than intended (& perhaps a wee bit off-topic at times) but sometimes clarity is called for in an opinion. There'll still always be nit-pickers & children & they can voice theirs too...that's the imperfect human world we all live together in but will be able to enjoy flying around when this comes out. Will leave personal judgement to then but don't envisage I'll be too disappointed with this new avenue of expansion of the FTX portflio. Way overdue for that month-or-so long breath now! However, I'm sure I've spoken to some extent for a chunky section of us who don't often voice at least) Cheers!
That sounds good. Can't wait to see the beta shots. On the Malaysian and Japanese shots, some sort of disclaimer might have helped to allay some fears.
I'm still baffled by the general lack of understanding of what this is. I guess people don't want to sign up for yet another forum. Have you considered making the previews forum public?

Good one :)
Whilst he might have been trolling, the fundamental, and in my opinion, very noteworthy question is this:
Is it not pointless to replace unsuitable/not-valid-for-region autogen with another unsuitable/not-valid-for-region autogen?
I mean take a look at this:
http://oi39.tinypic.com/adna4n.jpg
That's what the area around Kuala Lumpur really looks like, and there is not a single screenshot in Orbx's Malaysia thread that even comes close!
BTW Orbx will be releasing another freeware gem ;-)

But you are still missing the point of the product. It's not intended to bring 100% realism to any given area. It's intended to make it look more realistic than the FSX default scenery. If everyone can remember, default FSX is a desert in vast areas of the globe where there isn't desert in real life. If everyone can remember, default ground textures, even in lush areas, are bland and unrealistic. Have a proper read of the announcement http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/52819-orbx-announces-ftx-global-to-be-released-in-2013/
I think you're missing the point:
It seems pointless to have current autogen that doesn't portray the rice fields of Asia for example with new autogen that still doesn't correctly portray rice fields etc.
The whole point of replacing the autogen surely must be to correct such mistakes and put in place valid and regionally appropriate autogen.
So far many of the FTX Global screenshots have shown a poor implementation of these autogen replacements outside of Europe and North America. If I think of their Johannesburg screenshots alone, well it seems totally off!

Thanks JV. Take as long as you like in getting right, as it is intended to be for release-version! Appreciate the update on better textures in some regions.
Thanks guys, appreciate your understanding.
The preview forums are public Todd. Just letting you know, in case you had wanted to check them out.
