Orbx is all over P3D 2.0!

P3D. That's right! Now that the cat is finally out of the bag, all the developers in support of P3D 2.0 are coming out of the closet with all their shots and they all look mighty good displaying the new features! Orbx is no stranger to P3D and if it's one thing you can count on, all their products will be fully compatible with 2.0 from day one. I just can't tell you how excited I am about all this. In anticipation of release, I am heading out to add another 500GB SSD to my system! FS9 and FSX people, get ready to make the switch to the future! Check out these shots!

Wet blanket time... Looks just like it does in FSX to me. I'm failing to see "the future" in a product that isn't sold by a developer that is directing their product to the average Joe. This is a commercial product that end users have manipulated the word of the licensing such that it fits them, in order to use a product that appears on the surface to be a patched version of what we already have.

Perhaps after release some information, and even better, demonstrations, will emerge to change my opinion on that, but until then no grandiose statements with a lot of exclamation points will really do the trick for me I'm afraid. I'm still waiting for a consumer product that can actually be used as a legitimate replacement. Setting the obvious licensing discussion aside, anything that can utilize add-ons from a previous generation of its product is by definition not very innovative. It's a patch at best from where I sit.

Even if all of what you say is true, it would be a patch far better than the current neglected FSX offering...

End users have manipulated the word of licensing?

Wet blanket soaked in vodka maybe! Ha, are you for real or is this vodka talk? If you want to stay with buggy and OOM prone FSX using DX9 or DX10 then that's your choice.

As stated numerous times, the Academic license clearly allows a "Learning" use, which covers a very broad spectrum of individual usage and was put in place so we could all enjoy P3D.

Hence the manipulation. I've debated the "learning" aspect of the license ad nauseam and no amount of debate will force those that want a certain outcome to see it any other way. Feel free to interpret it any way you wish, but no matter how you slice it we are almost all here for "entertainment" which is specifically called out as not covered under the EULA. Just like suddenly everyone became a "developer" when that was the only license available to squeeze into. Now there is an academic license and suddenly no one is a developer anymore and we're all "learning" something. Again, hence the manipulation.

Now, back to my vodka soaked blanket.

I'm actually kind of excited for P3Dv2 now. At first I thought it wouldn't be worth the switch because of the licensing, incompatibilities, etc. But since I do honestly use FS for learning purposes, I have no problem buying the Academic license, and with Orbx on board, that seals the deal for me. PMDG's unstable 777 just isn't worth the stay, although I do hope they jump the bandwagon. I mean, after all, wasn't the very foundation of PMDG against Microsoft's EULA at the time??? You know, how the EULA clearly said no one could make money off of their product without their permission, which they didn't have at first? Ah, well, totally different story. Just can't wait for v2 to be released now.

Aaron, are you one of these people that just jump into FSX and try to take off and land at an airport? That is the extent of your entertainment?

Try to educate yourself and learn how to navigate from A to B. Quite simple really. Challenge yourself or indeed, stay away from P3D .... it is your choice and yours alone, just like I will continue learning and challenging myself in what appears to be a substantially improved platform.

Perhaps you just need to keep away from spouting your "holier than thou" nonsense in P3D threads and stick to gaming forums.

I jump in an plane and just fly around. I guess I'm not a "serious" simmer. Maybe I should pull my 90-odd files off of flightsim....talk about holier than thou.

Perhaps Dave you should try not to take things so personal and make an attempt at having a civilized debate without feeling required to stoop to insults to make a point.

To answer your question, I've been simming for 15 years and fly everything from a "simple" 172 all the way up to PMDG class airplanes. I've sunk thousands of dollars into my hobby and spent hundreds of hours "learning" various aircraft, flight planning, and figuring out how to get from point A to B. Have I learned a lot about aviation? Of course I have. Do I think it is the primary purpose for my simming? Of course I don't, nor do I think that is the case for most other simmers.

That's my opinion. You don't have to like it, and you are entitled to your own, but you not agreeing with me doesn't make mine any less relevant or applicable to this blog. Having said that, the tone of your response did indeed make me look twice to be sure I wasn't already at one of your gaming forums.

We have over 100 products which now work with FSX and P3D1. We will be updating every single one of them to work seamlessly with P3D2 and to take advantage of the new tech in that platform. This is from a trivial task and it will take us over a year and thousands of man hours. We won't be asking a cent from our customers for this work. I am not sure if that is appreciated by some people but anyway, we're committed to the platform and we want to ensure all our customers have the choice of sims open to them.

I don't understand all this talk about OOM errors. I have been playing with MS flightsims since the 80's and have never encountered these. In my FSX I have tons of addons and stuff and never had the problems other people list here. I could really care less about P3D as I too see no difference from the screen shots. I also feel FSX is much more user friendly for novice to expert users and that P3D is marketed to a niche group. This is exactly what has killed other sims in the past by only concentrating on a small group of users.

And Yes Dave.......There are a lot of people who have bought this simulator just to jump in and take off and land. It's a game, it is not like you are actually accomplishing anything when playing it other then entertaining yourself. And Guess what? Our money is just as valuable as yours and we buy addons also. Come down off your throne.........

Aaron while you remain hung up on the EULA, and fail to really grasp why the licensing deal is as it, is the rest of us in the meantime will continue to enjoy what they have to offer. If you enjoy OOM's and a discontinued product then go for it. I and many others will be having a ball with this.

Aaron said...

Thank you for making my point Mr. cowpatz. Why let a little thing like legalities or licensing stand in the way of something you want? Bah!

And it is interesting that you are convinced OOM are a thing of the past in a new version of FSX (let's not kid ourselves here) when unless you are a beta team member you are not even using yet. Did they make FSX a 64-bit application and I just missed the memo? Oh right, DX11 is the savior.

I'll bow out quietly now as I'm made my point, and many of the replies backed up what I have said, and I definitely do not know all the lyrics to kum ba yah.

Hope you don't get bashed for it John !!!
Always admired Orbx's work and you and your teams dedication to providing the best ongoing support.

Always admired you and your team's commitment to us flightsimmers. Unfortunately there are too many gamer kids willing to jump on in and try to stomp out any progress. Perhaps they don't have access to mum and dad's credit cards???

I want to take the time here to thank you and the Orbx Team for what they have brought to the Flight Sim world.
